Dirty Masala Chai Latte
Yield:
1-2 servings
Dirty chai lattes are my go-to drink when I'm out, so it's an absolute must that I know how to make a a quality one at home. This latte is a mixture of black tea and coffee and infused with masala chai spices, including cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and ginger.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups filtered water
- 1 tablespoon black tea (preferably Assam black tea) in a tea bag or tea strainer
- 1/2 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 inch piece of ginger, grated or chopped
- 3 whole cloves
- 3 whole cardamom pods
- 2 whole black peppercorns
- 1/2 cup milk or alternative milk
- 1 teaspoon sugar (or agave or maple syrup)
- 1 3 oz. cup of espresso, prepared (double if preparing for 2 people)
- 1-2 tablespoons whipping cream (optional)
Instructions
- In the bowl of a mortar and pestle, crush spices into smaller pieces. The chai spice mix doesn’t need to be crushed into a powder – just until the pieces are fairly small.
- In a small saucepan, bring water to a low simmer and steep black tea for about 3 minutes. Remove the tea and add the chai spices, milk, and sugar and continue simmering for about 7-10 minutes.
- Strain the masala chai tea into 1-2 serving cups. Add the prepared espresso (to taste) to the serving cups. In a small bowl, use an electric mixer or frother to thicken the heavy cream into a whipped cream, and top the serving cups with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
